Dad's trip to the Pacific Northwest to recruit
a new surgeon for CRSQA was the perfect excuse for Austin to come along
and enjoy the sights.
Flying Southwest Airlines lets both Glenn and Austin build up
frequent flyer miles and pretty soon a free trip. It looks like
Austin just might get a free trip before Dad!

Beautiful downtown Portland with the Willamette River
dividing East and West and the Columbia on the north separating Oregon
from Washington. |
We stayed at the restored 1902 Multanomah Hotel, now an Embassy
Suite. Possibly the nicest hotel and two room suite we've ever
had. We even did room service!

We missed it last time we were in Portland, so this
time we were sure to visit the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry,
OMSI for short. |
OMSI was great with many fun things to do. Here Austin
is riding a virtual gravity machine. You really feel like you're in
a flying spaceship as it bounces you around on hydraulic lifts.

With all the numbered pieces in place and enough hands, you
could complete an entire arch right down to the keystone. |
The challenge of Tower Builder was to make a structure at
least 18" tall that could withstand a simulated
earthquake. Living in California paid off because Austin & Dad's
design was over 20" and took everything they could hand out.

Dad and his funky restaurants! Our hotel was in
downtown Portland just around the corner from China Town where this cool
old diner was found. |
Here is a great night shot of downtown Portland with
Mt. Hood and a full moon in the background. |

|
A Gray Line tour took us all around town including to the
Forestry Museum. All made of wood with many displays. The best
part was it was next to the zoo where Austin found a hat he liked. |
The tour continued to Portland's Japanese
Gardens. This pagoda is from Portland's sister city Sapporo.
The stones are in the shape of Japanese island of Hokkaido. |
 |
 |
Here are Dad and Austin at the Japanese
Gardens. Supposedly these gardens are better maintained than many
in Japan and are truly authentic. It sure was beautiful. |
Talk about meticulous maintenance! He is actually
using a pair of tweezers to weed the garden!

Flowers, brooks, rock gardens, trees, even a bridge so Austin can get
a better look at the Koi. |
Appropriately named Heavenly Falls at the end of the
Strolling Pond Garden. |
 |
 |
This is the Strolling Pond Garden that flows to the bottom
of the water falls. It is full of huge Koi. Austin was able
to pet one! |
The Sapporo pagoda can be seen through this large
wisteria arbor. |
 |
 |
This is the Guardian Stone and gate as we ended the walking tour. |
That's all for this short trip to Portland. It was fun for just Austin
and Dad to have a trip together. Even though they missed their flight back
home and ended up waiting, it was in the Red Carpet room so they really didn't
mind all that much.
