It may no longer be the largest, but it is the one we all want to see.  Even King Kong couldn't escape the lure of the Empire State Building.

Built during the depression at an amazing rate of speed, the girders were still warm when they arrived and were hoisted into place.

At the very top of the Empire State Building in the spire.  This is above the observation deck.  Freaky.  You can feel the movement.

We had stopped at Rockefeller Center and visited the NBC Store. Many souvenirs for friends at home came from there.  That is also the bag Austin thought he had left at 30 Rock.  He actually had left it at the Sharper Image Store.  Once more New York surprised us.  The bag was there an hour later when we returned.

Looking downtown toward Battery Park.  Even now the Empire State Building is very much the lone skyscraper in midtown.

Looking uptown toward Central Park and Harlem.

The water in the East River is now so clean you can eat fish out of the rivers, although it is not recommended you eat more than one a month!  That's New Jersey on the other side.

The last day we were in New York we walked from our midtown hotel down Fifth Avenue to a flea market at Washington Square.  This is Jordan and Austin feeding pigeons in the square.

We then continued on through SoHo, the Greenwich Village, and all the way to the World Trade Center.

This photo was taken just before ascending to the observation deck of the World Trade Center.

Our train left Penn Station at 4:55pm.  At 4:00 we were still on the roof of the tower.  A quick cabbie got us to our hotel to pick up our luggage and to the train on time.

Now we are at the World Trade building looking down on the Brooklyn Bridge.  The bridge had just been finished when our homesteading family arrived in 1887.  They immediately headed to South Dakota.  I think if they had waited too long they probably would have fallen in love in New York.  How different we would all be if that had happened.

That point in the center is the Empire State Building towering in midtown.  Just behind is Central Park where we rented a row boat and paddled about..

Queens and Brooklyn.  The winds were not too high so we were able to go all the way to the roof.  Lucky us!  Dad had to keep looking at his feet.

Staten Island side.  The two islands are Liberty Island with the statue and Ellis Island.

Notice how you can see the curvature of the earth.

Looking straight down.  See those thin white lines.  Those are city busses!

Another view looking down.  Those are great big ships in the water.
